When working with AI-generated voices, getting pronunciation right is crucial. A single mispronounced word can change meaning, distort tone, or make a brand name sound unrecognisable. 

Whether it’s a company name, a product, or a person, pronunciation shapes credibility and trust — and in multilingual AI dubbing, precision matters more than ever. There are a few ways to guide AI towards the correct pronunciation, but not all of them deliver reliable results.

1. Spell it out by ear

A quick fix is to approximate pronunciation using familiar spellings. For example, you might write Chopin as Sho-pahn. It’s intuitive, but not precise — this method only gives a rough idea of how a word should sound.


2. Say it out loud

Some AI tools let you record the word yourself, so the system can learn and copy your speech pattern. This approach can be useful for single instances, but it’s hard to scale — and consistency often suffers when multiple people are involved.



3. Use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)

The most accurate and consistent method is to use IPA — a system of writing sounds using internationally recognised symbols. With IPA, Chopin is written as /ˈʃɔ.pɛ̃/, capturing the exact pronunciation without ambiguity.

Agnieszka Walczak, PhD, is a media accessibility expert, audiovisual translator, translator trainer, and one of the founders of AVT Masterclass.
