Start with the language,
then the timing,
then the tools

By the end you are not just making subtitles, you are making them fast and making them well

Whether you are subtitling your first clip or you have been muddling through without ever being taught the timing properly, this is the full path in one place. Start with the language, move on to the timing, then learn to do the whole thing at speed. By the end you are not just making subtitles, you are making them well and making them fast.

“This is a great course for anyone wanting to get a general, broad overview of subtitling best practices. While it is mainly geared towards linguists, I am a project manager who handles AVT jobs. I found it equally useful because I now have a better understanding of timings, template creation, and linguistic matters to consider. I will use these to help ensure my linguists have all they need to thrive. ”

“I would like to leave my review on the course Fundamentals of Subtitling, which l have done recently. To start with,l need to mention it is my first experience ever with AVT Masterclass and l am totally charmed. The course was so well-constructed that you would never get tired of the lesson. Highly professional lecturers, lots of examples, and simple explanations made me follow the course tightly. Furthermore, there were PDFs available to help you remember the information better. I do really appreciate the work which your team is doing and looking forward to studying further. Thank you once more and again)”

“Just completed the Timing Subtitles 101 course and was very happy with the content, structure and outcome of the course. AVT Masterclass provides a 3-month trial version of both OOONA and EZ Titles, which is great to get to grips with how both software packages work (note that although the course is self-paced, obviously you would need to complete most of it within 3 months while you have access to the software). There is a lot of content and there are lots of in-depth exercises to practise on both packages. The videos are insightful and break down the material nicely for beginners. The small video projects you get to work on are also pretty cool. Personally I would say the course may not be suited to a complete beginner as you do need to troubleshoot your own work at times and fill some gaps in knowledge, but overall it is a very complete course for learning the principles of subtitling, and it also refers to additional resources online such as the EZ Titles videos on YouTube, blogs, articles, etc. I also like that you still have access to the course contents for a year as I am sure I will need to refer to it again! I do feel I have learnt a lot and I feel a lot more confident in my subtitling skills now. Thanks to Agnieszka and Lukasz for their support!”

“This course is packed with useful tips and resources and has definitely deepened my understanding of subtitling and its tools. I did feel overwhelmed going through it as a beginner subtitler and I feel it could have been structured differently to be more manageable and gradual. There could also be a beginner version of it that would be better to include in the beginners' bundle. ”

“I have experience of translating and interpreting, so I thought it would be easy to do subtitling - just translate the text. Little did I know. Subtitling has a lot of nuances and if you want to be a professional - you have to know all of them. I think this course is a good start for those who have never done subtitling and want to understand what it looks like from the inside. The information was presented well, you would do exercises and I loved the speakers - full of light and knowledge. Going to pass some of the other courses here!”

FAQ

  • What is the difference between this and the standard Ultimate Guide bundle?

The coaching. This premium bundle includes everything in the standard bundle, the premium version of Timing Subtitles 101, and a 90-minute one-to-one session with an expert who reviews your work and gives you personal feedback.

  • Which order should I do them in?

The order they are listed, if you are starting out. Fundamentals of Subtitling teaches you the language and the conventions, Timing Subtitles 101 teaches you to time what you have translated, and Speed up your subtitling workflow teaches you to do the whole thing faster with the right tools. That said, they are self-paced and yours for keeps for the duration of your access, so if you already know your way around and just want the timing course first, nobody is stopping you.

  • How do I book the coaching?

By email, and it's refreshingly low-tech. Once you've started the courses, drop us a line and we'll arrange your session with one of the trainers at a time that works for you.

  • Can I split the coaching into shorter sessions?

Yes. Use the full 90 minutes in one sitting, or split it into two 45-minute sessions, whatever suits your schedule and how you like to learn.

  • Do I need any experience to start?

None. The bundle is built to take you from your first subtitle to a professional workflow, so it assumes you are starting from scratch.

  • Will I have to attend live classes?

No. It is entirely self-paced, with nothing scheduled and nothing to show up for. You work through it whenever it suits you, as much or as little at a sitting as you like.

  • What if it turns out not to be for me?

Then you get your money back. We offer a 100% money-back guarantee: if the courses don't deliver what we say they do, or they are not the right fit, tell us and we will refund you. We would rather you learned something than felt stuck with something.

  • What do we cover in the one to one session?

Whatever will help you most. It's built around your work, so we can look at your timing and reading speeds, go through subtitles you've made, work on the things you're finding hard, or simply answer the questions the courses raised.

  • Who is the coaching session with?

One of our three trainers, Agnieszka Szarkowska, Agnieszka Walczak or Łukasz Dutka. All three work in subtitling and teach on our courses.
